Why I Started

"When I began my career, I had some great mentors from all backgrounds. However, the lack of representation from others who looked like me in higher positions at the time made my journey feel isolating.

Having someone in leadership who looked like me would have given me extra belief that I could also achieve higher positions in this field.

I launched Black UX&UI Designers in 2020 for this very reason. However, I had to step back due to personal challenges, including job changes and a few negative experiences. These challenges triggered imposter syndrome, and I questioned how I could give advice when I was struggling myself.

After taking time to reflect, I realised by God’s grace that my experiences could still inspire and help others. Feedback from members of the group further confirmed the value of this community.

Now, I’m fully committed to creating a space where Black designers can grow and thrive—the kind of community I wish I had when I started out."

Mentoring/Support & Testimonials

I have also spent some time helping members one on one providing mentorship and support to help them on their design journey:

Rafiu Onalaja

"Ansbert is not only talented and inspiring, but also incredibly generous with his time. He helped me improve my portfolio, gave me thoughtful advice and created a community to support and inspire like-minded designers. He is genuinely a great person with a bright future ahead."

Regine Thimothee

"Being part of Black UX and UI Designers has been one of the most meaningful parts of my design journey. As a Black designer navigating a field where representation still matters deeply, having a community that genuinely understands that experience has been invaluable.

Ansbert has created something special, a space where designers at every level can learn, grow and feel seen. I have watched this community grow by seeing designers from multiple places around the world come together, especially for events like our Show & Tells.

Ansbert himself has become a mentor to me in the truest sense. As I pursue higher education in experience design, I find myself looking to him and this community as a reminder of why representation matters and what is possible. I am so grateful for this space and so inspired by how far it has come. If you are a Black designer looking for community, connection and genuine growth, this is it."
